I’ll be honest with you—wellness and self-care feel especially hard for me right now. This time of year, with its whirlwind of expectations, commitments, and emotions, can be overwhelming. And when life gets tough, self-care is often the first thing to fall to the bottom of the list.
But here’s the paradox: when things feel the hardest, that’s exactly when self-care is the most important.
I’m reminding myself of this truth daily, and if you’ve been struggling, I want to remind you too. Self-care isn’t selfish. It’s how we refill our cups so we can keep going, so we can be present for ourselves and for those we love.
Let’s talk about how we can lean into wellness and self-care, even when it feels like a struggle.
1. Start Small and Keep It Simple
When you’re feeling stretched thin, the idea of self-care can feel overwhelming—like one more thing on an already too-long to-do list.
That’s why I’m starting small. Some days, self-care looks like sipping tea while I sit in silence for five minutes. Other days, it’s stepping outside to feel the fresh air on my face.
Self-care doesn’t have to be grand or time-consuming. It’s about finding little moments that nourish your soul and letting them add up.
2. Acknowledge How You’re Feeling
One of the most powerful forms of self-care is simply being honest with yourself.
For me, this season brings up a mix of joy, stress, and even grief. Instead of pushing those feelings aside, I’m learning to acknowledge them. Journaling, talking to a trusted friend, or even just saying out loud, “This is hard for me,” can be incredibly freeing.
You don’t have to have it all together all the time. It’s okay to feel what you feel.
3. Set Boundaries and Protect Your Peace
The holidays and year-end hustle can come with extra demands—work deadlines, social gatherings, family expectations. And while it’s wonderful to show up for others, it’s equally important to protect your energy.
This year, I’m practicing saying no without guilt. No to overcommitting. No to things that feel like too much. And yes to the things that truly bring me peace and joy.
4. Create Space for Rest and Recovery
Wellness and self-care don’t always mean doing more. Sometimes, they mean doing less.
I’ve been reminding myself that rest is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. Whether it’s going to bed earlier, taking a nap, or simply lying on the couch without feeling guilty about it, rest is how we recharge.
5. Lean on Your Support System
If you’re having a hard time, know that you don’t have to go through it alone.
For me, reaching out to friends and loved ones has been a lifeline. Whether it’s a quick check-in text or a long conversation, connection is a powerful form of self-care.
And if you feel like you need more support, don’t hesitate to seek it—whether that’s from a therapist, counselor, or support group. Asking for help is one of the bravest things you can do.
6. Focus on What Feels Good Right Now
When everything feels overwhelming, I ask myself one question: What can I do right now to feel just a little bit better?
Some days, that’s lighting a candle and turning on calming music. Other days, it’s taking a short walk or wrapping myself in a cozy blanket.
Wellness and self-care don’t have to look the same every day. Trust yourself to know what you need in the moment.
It’s Okay to Take It One Day at a Time
If you’re finding wellness and self-care extra hard right now, know that you’re not alone—and that it’s okay to take it one day at a time. Some days, it might feel like a victory just to show yourself a little kindness, and that’s enough.
Let’s commit to prioritizing ourselves, even in small ways, especially when life feels the hardest. We deserve it. You deserve it.
