We’ve all been there: those days where everything feels off, nothing goes as planned, and you just want to crawl back into bed. Whether it’s stress at work, a disagreement with a loved one, or just that overall sense of “blah,” rough days happen. And while we can’t avoid them, we can definitely take steps to soften the blow. If you’re having one of those days, here are a few things that might help you get through it.
When everything feels like it’s spiraling out of control, the simple act of pausing and taking a deep breath can work wonders. It helps calm your nervous system and gives you a moment to reset. Try inhaling slowly through your nose for 4 seconds, holding for 4 seconds, and exhaling through your mouth for 4 seconds.
If you’re overwhelmed, sometimes the best thing to do is step away from the situation. Go for a short walk, make a cup of tea, or just sit in silence for a few minutes. Giving yourself space, even for just a few minutes, can give you a fresh perspective.
If your thoughts are racing and you’re not sure what to do next, grab a pen and paper (or open up a notes app) and just start writing. Get everything out of your head—whether it’s frustration, sadness, or even confusion. Sometimes putting it all on paper helps you see things more clearly, and you might find that it’s not as overwhelming as it feels.
When the day feels heavy, finding small moments of joy can make a huge difference. Watch a funny video, listen to a song that makes you want to dance, or call a friend who always knows how to make you laugh. It doesn’t have to be big—just something that lifts your spirits, even if only for a minute.
This one is important. It’s so easy to feel like you need to have everything together all the time, but the truth is, we’re all human. Some days are going to be tough, and that’s okay. The important thing is to be kind to yourself. Take it one step at a time, and don’t feel like you have to “fix” everything right now.
Rough days don’t last forever, but the way you treat yourself during them can make a big difference. Give yourself the same grace you’d give a friend, and remember—it’s just a day. Tomorrow’s a fresh start.
If you’re reading this and having a rough day, know that you’re not alone. We all have those days, and they don’t define us. Sometimes all it takes is a deep breath, a small act of kindness (to yourself!), and a little distraction to turn things around.
